Last month at our monthly DMAG meeting, my name was selected to choose a book from an array of topics.  When I picked up the book titled: Zen and Magic of Photography by Wayne Rowe; I was immediately attracted to the titled then later the images inside. I selected the book because I was curious what the author might share about how the state of ZEN could be achieved in the creation of art in any form.

One might ask, exactly what is ZEN?  Well, even after reading Wayne Rowe's book, I am still not certain I know ... but I will attempt to translate.  However, for a better definition of ZEN click here: http://www.logoi.com/notes/whatis_zen.html

It does appear that Mr. Rowe is knowledgeable on the subject. He instructs the reader to develop a visual awareness when handling their camera and to focus on the state of being first, before shooting.  He mentions that all forms of photo imagery are interconnected.  How we learn that principal is how we apply this technique and how it relates to others. Basically we see, therefore being exist.

After reading the Zen and Magic of Photography, I though I recognized the concept of ZEN in the relationship of my life and creating. (Perhaps it is a place I am able to achieve in my mind when I paint.) Perhaps a photographer, a painter, a sculpture, fabric artist or even a writer can achieve a level of ZEN, in terms of meditation. The way I understand ZEN, it is not a religion, it's not a place in time ... but rather a way of living and experiencing life.

When one totally escapes the world around them, when you are in your work and you have totally blocked out the noise of traffic driving down the street, the TV or radio playing in the next room, the students chatter down the hall, or even the hum of over-head lights, a ceiling fan, etc., ... then you have achieved some of the magic that the author discusses.  The author calls this state of being, while creating ...

If ZEN is a philosophy, a state of being ... then how can one reach that state while they are working, taking a photo or even perhaps while creating a painting?

Wayne's book explains how in the nature of photography: the two essential elements of taking photos are the creations of art and analysis thus making the invisible visible.  One must practice to experience the creative process, just as one must practice the art of experiencing Zen.

Other than some incredible photography shown in this book, other points of interest are: The relationship of ZEN and Photography is essential in every photo. For all the digital designers, Mr. Rowe also has a interesting collection of digitally enhaced photos beginning on page 80. Basically, Zen and the Magic of Photography can help anyone, (be they an amateur or professional photographer) develop a visual awareness, to light forms and inner confidence.

I enjoyed reading Zen and the Magic of Photography and consider it a well written book.
