471 Deke McClelland presents an entirely new way to approach masking in Photoshop CS4 Channels & Masks One-on-One. The idea of using an image to select itself is a wonderful concept and can significantly reduce the amount of time put in to creating selections. Deke starts out thoroughly explaining the existing selection tools, such as the magic wand and magnetic lasso, even giving special advice on when and how to use them properly. The real meat of the book comes a few chapters in, starting with composting with blend modes and going on to selecting with channels and other more advanced techniques. I had the privilege to sit through Deke's tutorial on making selections with the calculations command at Photoshop World 2010. He explained in great detail how to properly use the technique, it is explained equally as well in this book. |

337 Down & Dirty Tricks in Photoshop by Scott Kelby is a great book to have on your desk for frequent perusal and use. This is one of the few books out there that you can find that will actually run you through the "real world" tricks that you see in everyday advertisements. At 337 pages it honestly is not that long, but it is packed with super tips that you may have either scratched your head at how to do or, had a much greater/longer workflow to accomplish. This book is full of helpful hints that can get you creating great composite art with the least amount of work. |

421 Hands down Focal Press continues to print some of the most outstanding to look at and learn from books on the market. Creative Photoshop by Derek Lea is a perfect example of a book that exceeds the expectations I have come to have with their books. It is however, not for the novice user. A novice user may be able to follow the exercises, but I think that it would be difficult for them to apply many of the intermediate to advanced techniques scattered throughout the book. Each lesson has a useful rating system of difficulty to let you know what you are getting into prior to starting a lesson. I found the rating systems had more to do with potential time expenditure rather than difficulty of the actual technique. So, here are a few considerations if you are thinking about getting this book: |

270 When I first picked up this book I thought it was going to be a typical book on editing photographs. I really wish the title gave a better clue as to what it's about, which is one thing: Digital Workflow. And for that subject it gives a very good introduction for anyone who is trying to figure out how Adobe's Bridge, Photoshop, Lightroom and Camera Raw products fit together smoothly. The first section, Setup, leads the reader through the fundamentals of digital images, principles of color and color management. Also discussed is the basics computer and work environment configuration to have the best editing experience. Finally each of the tools is given a general introduction. |

497 Review: Adobe Photoshop CS4: The Professional Portfolio THIS BOOK IS THE GREATEST!!! Against The Clock also has DreamWeaver CS4, InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4 and Flash CS4. Illustrator and DreamWeaver were floating around last month's meeting and I wish I had grabbed both of them, but I guess one at a time is good enough. |

677 The size of the book was a little intimidating for me at first but once I opened it up and started reading it, I realized that the size was definitely necessary to thoroughly cover the many subjects for PS CS4 and how it relates to photographers specifically. I found that as a photographer using Photoshop, this book is worth its weight in gold! |
